I admit it. I’m a big big biiiggg lover of musicals – movies, Westend, Broadway – you name it! I love them! In fact, I love one particular musical so much, I’ve gotten a tattoo of it. Yep. You read that right. A tattoo of a musical. On my body. Forever…
- Hadestown. This musical is my most favorite musical in the whole wide world. I have the logo of it tattooed on my shoulder. It’s based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, two lovers who are poor and facing rough times on earth. However, Hades notices that Eurydice is struggling and offers her money, in return of work – the catch is that she has to die in order to go. This musical is a literal work of art. Everything about it is so beautiful. The lighting, the staging, the story. Everything. A few of my favorite lyrics: ”People turn on you just like the wind, everybody is a fair weather friend, in the end you’re better off alone, any way the wind blows” ”I was alone so long, I didn’t even know that I was lonely” ”I knew you before we met and I don’t even know you yet.” ”Why do we build the wall? We build the wall to keep us free, and the wall keeps out the enemy, the enemy is poverty.” (relevant in today’s society.) ” You kissed your little life goodbye, And Hades laid his hands on you, And gave you everlasting life, And everlasting overtime” ”Wait for me I’m coming!” ”I used to see the way the world could be, but now the way it is is all I see” and so many more. Honestly I could write a whole essay on why I’m in love with this musical.
2. Heathers. This musical is such a fun but sad one. It’s based on the cult classic, Heathers 1989 (Christian Slater is so hot in it, just saying), but has been adapted to fit a more modern audience, although the plot is still set in the 80’s. It’s the original Mean Girls but so much better and deadlier. Not going to lie, I cried at the end – but I probably shouldn’t have.
3. Six. This musical is one of the shortest musicals I’ve ever seen, only 90 minutes long with no intermission. It’s funny, historical (ish), and stylish. The songs are so catchy and fun – imagine Horrible Histories but musical form, there you have it, that’s Six. It’s based on the 6 wives of Henry the 8th and they are competing to see who had it worse.
4. Hamilton! Although I haven’t seen this one life, I have seen the Disney Plus version with the original cast and it is so good. It’s based on America’s founding farther (well one of them!) Alexander Hamilton. The songs are cleverly written and composed, and the dancers are amazing. In addition, not to sound basic but – Daveed Diggs.
Honourable mentions: Come From Away, Chicago, West Side Story, Miss Saigon, The Great Comet of 1812, Mean Girls.
