Why Do People Go Skydiving?
Why do people go skydiving? People go skydiving for various reasons, but one of the most common motives is to experience a rush of adrenaline – and trust me, you feel it! The feeling of free falling through the air at high speeds is an exhilarating experience that any other activity cannot replicate. Additionally, skydiving challenges individuals to step out of their comfort zones, seek discomfort and conquer their fears, boosting their confidence and self-esteem.
It also provides a unique opportunity to see the world from a different perspective, as the breathtaking views from thousands of feet high cannot be seen from the ground. Furthermore, skydiving is a way for people to push their physical and mental limits and prove to themselves that they can achieve something difficult and out of the ordinary – and it’s quite a cool thing to do, too!
Why Is 15,000ft The Highest Option To Skydive From?
Why is 15,000ft the highest option for skydiving? The altitude of 15,000 feet is the standard height for skydiving because it allows for enough time for the parachutes to deploy and for the skydivers to safely reach the ground.
At this altitude, there is also enough oxygen in the air for the skydivers to breathe comfortably, and the air is dense enough to provide enough resistance for a controlled descent. Additionally, skydiving from a higher altitude allows for a longer freefall experience of around 60 seconds and provides a more scenic view during the jump.
Trying to skydive from a lower altitude may not give enough time for the parachute to open, putting the skydiver at risk for a dangerous landing. Skydiving operators adhere to strict safety guidelines and regulations, and an altitude of 15,000 feet is considered the ideal height for a safe and enjoyable skydiving experience.
Is Skydiving Scary?
Is skydiving scary? This depends on the person! To some people, skydiving can be a scary experience. The thought of falling from a high altitude and entrusting your life to a parachute can trigger fears and anxiety – but this is all part of the fun! However, for others, it can be one of the best things that they have ever done. Ultimately, the level of fear or excitement experienced during a skydiving jump may vary from person to person.
Is Skydiving Dangerous?
Is skydiving dangerous? Of course skydiving can be dangerous if not done properly, however, skydiving is actually very safe when all the precautions are followed. In the UK, there have been no tandem skydiving deaths since 1990, and according to the United States Parachute Association, the current fatality rate for skydiving is 0.0007% per jump, which is relatively low compared to other activities such as scuba diving or driving a car. As with any adventure sport, it is important to carefully assess the risks and make an informed decision before participating.
GoSkydive Swansea Experience and Review:
I was originally gifted my skydive a few months ago, as a birthday present from my amazing boyfriend – not many people can say that their boyfriend paid money to get them chucked out of a plane 😉 Seriously though, I was extremley grateful to get such a great gift!
GoSkydive has three locations in the UK, and I chose GoSkydive Swansea as that’s where my boyfriend did his, and it was the closest location to us. Originally, my skydive was scheduled for two earlier dates, but it got rescheduled due to the weather conditions – which I don’t mind at all, as I’d rather be safe! Finally, in August, I got the chance to do the skydve.
GoSkydive will update you by text message and email if you skydive will or will not go ahead the day before at around 5pm – so make sure you give the the correct information.
We had to arrive at 8am, and the check-in process was very simple. After checking-in, the other skydivers and I, were taken to a room where we were shown a safety video and what to expect during the skydive. After the video finished, we then had to wait for our names to be called.
I was in the second group to be called, and then had to kit up! This included the jumpsuit, harness and gloves. Then we had to go outside, and practice the positions that we were taught, such as the exit position and landing position. We then met our instructors – and it was time to board the plane and set off (me being a plane nerd, this was my favourite part of course haha!).
It was really nice to just look outside and at the views, and strangely at this part you’re just enjoying everything. I was thinking to myself, “wow, were quite high up.”, then my instructor goes to me “we’re not even half way yet!” – yet strangely, at this point you’re not scared yet…but then a few minutes later, the door opens – and you realise that you’ve never been in a plane with the door open before, and begin thinking “Why? Wam I jumping out of a perfectly fine plane?”. Then, you see people being sucked out, and it hits you.
Three girls left the plane at 10,000ft, and then the door closed back up – as we had to go higher for ours. It was just me, another girl and our instructors now – and the other girl and I just turned to eachother and exchanged a similar look. Then the door was back open, she was sucked out, and then it was my turn. Honestly, getting to the door was a bit of a blur, as all I remember is sliding, and then all of a sudden I was hanging out the edge of the door, as my instructor was swinging back and fourth before giving it one final push – and then the ground was coming towards me!
It’s very strange as you can see you’re falling, but your brain doesn’t quite process it in that moment. You also don’t feel like your falling, just that you have lots of resistance from the wind pushing against you. It’s kind of like when you’re on a rollercoaster and go down from the top quickly!
After a very long 60 seconds, the parachute opened and then it was very peacful, as you’re just hanging there. My instructor asked if I wanted to do spins – of course I said yes! You’re parachuting for about 5 minutes, and then the landing comes in fast, which is very fun.
Overall, my skydive experience with GoSkydive in Swansea was really really amazing, and I will always remember it for the rest of my life. If there was one thing that could be better, it would be to improve the phone communcation as I remember that there were times that I found it very hard to get through. Additonally, it did take around 4 days to recieve the video of my skydive, which is a while – however, I was told that they were short staffed. It would’ve been nice to recieve a certificate too. The best parts had to be how seamless the process was and how nice the instructors were!
GoSkydive FAQ:
Skydiving feels as if you are floating instead of falling. You are being pushed at constantly by wind resistance, until the parachute deploys.
Yes, it is extremely rare if you are taking the right precautions. You are probably more at risk during your drive to the skydiving centre than during the actual skydive itself.
When skydiving, you are going at speed of around 120mph!
