Leopardsong Game Lodge Safari Review:
When I went to Johannesburg, South Africa, I knew I had to do a safari! I chose to go with Leopardsong as, ultimately, they were the best-priced and most recommended. Additionally, they also had last-minute availability, which was great, as I booked around 3 weeks in advance (flight attendant life 😉 ).
The driver picked us up from our hotel, and we set off on the drive, which took around 2 hours in total. On the way, our driver answered all of our questions and explained more about the safari experience and South Africa in general, which was extremely interesting and helped the drive go faster. He also took our lunch order, which had quite a lot of choices to choose from.
Once at Leopardsong Game Lodge, we were given our rooms and a few minutes to settle in before joining the “main table” for lunch. At Leopardsong, guests eat all around one big table; however, if you wish to eat separately, you can also do so. I had a toastie with chips for lunch, which was much needed after the car journey!
After lunch, we were given a few more minutes to relax before then setting out on our safari! Before leaving, we spotted some zebra and impala right next to our rooms, which was such a special moment. We then met our ranger, jumped in the jeep and set off!
It took about 20 minutes of driving before we came across Elephant tracks on the ground, which were very faint to see – but luckily, our ranger knew what to look for. We waited for a few minutes, but couldn’t spot them, so we set off again, but suddenly, as we went around the corner, two Elephants came charging at us! Fortunately, our ranger managed to reverse in time, and we found out that they had a baby with them. We both accidentally startled each other. It was a scary experience but also a very memorable one!
After coming across the elephants, we drove around some more and came across other animals like giraffes, some more zebra and impalas, birds and beetles. We then pulled over, and our ranger let us get out of the jeep. He gave us some drinks and food, which was a nice and much-needed touch!
Tip: Bring a blanket and warm clothes with you – it gets cold!
We were then back to exploring for a while when suddenly our ranger got a call through the radio to go to a certain place – so he stepped up the speed and took us there. We were all confused and excited as to why…when a massive lion abruptly came stalking out of the bush, straight towards our vehicle! Holding our breath, we were all in shock as he walked right past us, staring and stepping slowly. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life – a massive lion at arms reach away!
After he walked past us, we followed him for a few minutes and then went back to looking for more animals. However, now the sun was setting, so different species were coming out. We didn’t have too much luck in the dark, but it was interesting to see and explore.
Soon, we headed back to the lodge, where we spent some time by the fireplace, had dinner and some more drinks, and then headed to bed. The rooms were very spacious and clean. It had everything you would need for a few night’s stay, such as water, soap, bug spray, and blankets and was decorated beautifully! There was also a fan to bring the heat down and a very informative booklet about all the different animals we could come across during our stay and what to do if so! Unluckily for two girls in a different room to mine, had a massive spider ambush them – so it’s important to be aware that these things can happen!
In the morning, we paid for another safari drive, so we had to wake up and be ready for 5:30 am! It was worth waking up early, as we came across a pack of lions, more elephants, buffalo, bison, warthogs and even a crocodile! We also stopped off for some snacks and drinks again next to the lake, which was a fantastic view.
After the morning safari, which lasted for around 2.5-3 hours, we came back to the lodge to eat breakfast – which was extremely tasty and filling. As we were eating, our ranger came running to us and pulled up with some other rangers in the jeep and told us to jump in quickly – so we did albeit confused. They drove us for a few minutes, and then we saw why – there were Cheetahs, and they even had a kill! It was such a rare moment, as they explained that they hadn’t seen the Cheetahs in over 2 months.
We then headed back to finish our breakfast and pack. After packing, we then paid and set off on our journey home. Overall, I would definitely recommend staying at Leopardsong Game Lodge and doing both game drives – it was so worth it! If I could change anything about the experience, I don’t think I would change anything. Maybe it would’ve been nicer if the WiFi stretched to the lodges, but this really wasn’t such a big deal, and it was nice to connect with nature and just switch off.
