Why Visit Marrakech?

Why visit Marrakech? In February, my boyfriend and I decided to visit Marrakech to celebrate my birthday- and we’re so glad we did. Marrakech is such a vibrant and exotic city that offers a truly unique experience for tourists. Known as the Red City for its striking red walls and buildings, visitors are immediately drawn to the bustling markets, aromatic spices, and stunning architecture – there’s truly no other city like it.

One of the main attractions is the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, a lively hub that comes alive at night with street performers, musicians, and food stalls. The atmosphere is electrifying and provides a glimpse into Morocco’s rich culture and traditions.

History enthusiasts will also be in awe of Marrakech, home to numerous historical sites and landmarks. The Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs are just a few architectural wonders showcasing the city’s rich past. With its iconic minaret, the magnificent Koutoubia Mosque is also a must-see for tourists.

Additionally, Marrakech is a base for trips to the nearby Atlas Mountains, where visitors can go on scenic hikes and experience the untouched beauty of rural Morocco – and was definitely one of our favourite parts of the trip. The city offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination for any traveller seeking an unforgettable experience as there are plenty of unique things to do in Marrakech for all to enjoy.

What is Marrakech famous for? Marrakech is famous for its bustling markets, known as souks, which are major tourist attractions. These colourful markets offer a wide range of goods, from intricately woven rugs and leather goods to spices, ceramics, and traditional Moroccan clothing. The maze-like alleys of the souks are lined with shops and stalls, and navigating through the vibrant chaos is an experience unlike any other. Tourists can also try to haggle with the friendly vendors, creating a fun and unique shopping experience.

Another thing Marrakech is famous for is its delicious and aromatic cuisine – and we made the most of it! The city has a rich culinary tradition influenced by a mix of Arab, Berber, and Andalusian cultures. Visitors can indulge in traditional Moroccan tagines, spicy couscous, and freshly baked bread, all infused with fragrant spices like cumin, paprika, and saffron. The food is often served in beautiful, colourful dishes and enjoyed in atmospheric settings such as rooftop terraces or courtyard gardens. Food lovers will also enjoy the lively food markets and street food stalls, where they can sample local delicacies and interact with the friendly locals.

Lastly, Marrakech is famous for its stunning architecture, particularly the riads, or traditional Moroccan houses. These houses are characterised by their inward-facing layout and lush, central courtyards. Many riads have been converted into luxury boutique hotels, offering visitors a unique cultural experience. The city also has numerous historical sites such as the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace, and the Saadian Tombs, all showcasing intricate Islamic architecture and design. Overall, Marrakech is renowned for its beautiful and diverse architecture, adding to the city’s charm and attraction for tourists.

Marrakech is filled to the brim with amazing experiences, many of which are extremely affordable also! Here are the 11 most unique things to do in Marrakech:

1. Quad Biking in the Desert

Marrakech offers an exciting opportunity for tourists to explore the vast and rugged desert landscapes on quad bikes. This activity is a must-do for adventure-seekers and offers a unique perspective of the city’s surrounding areas. It was one of our favourite activities that we did in Marrakech and it was a lot better than we expected.

Tourists can join guided tours that take them through the vast desert, allowing them to witness stunning sunsets and breathtaking landscapes. Riding through the desert on a quad bike is also a thrilling experience, offering an adrenaline rush as you navigate through sandy hills and stretches of open land.

Additionally, quad biking in the desert allowed us to experience the local Berber culture first-hand, as we got to drink delicious Moroccan tea and stopped for snacks and bread halfway through our tour, and rode through villages. Many other tours stop at traditional villages, where visitors can interact with friendly locals and learn about their way of life. These villages provide a glimpse into a more rural and traditional way of living, in contrast to the bustling city life in Marrakech.

Quad biking in the desert is a great way to escape the busy city and connect with nature, and it is one of the most unique things to do in Marrakech. The vast desert provides a peaceful and serene environment, making it the perfect activity for those seeking a break from the chaos of city life.

Our tour lasted around 3-4 hours and included insurance, pick-up/ drop-off, tea and snacks. We chose to do it at sunset, which made the landscape look beautiful. If you plan on doing it, I’d recommend bringing warm clothes that you don’t mind getting dusty, and also wear your hair in a low ponytail or not up at all. The tour we booked can be found here.

2. Desert Sunset Dinner and Show

Dinner in the desert with a show, is one of the most unique experiences that you can do in Marrakech. It combines the serenity of the desert with the vibrant and lively culture of Morocco. We decided to do it on my birthday, which was the best way to celebrate – we spent the evening eating delicious food, dancing and singing under the stars and I even got a birthday cake!

How it happens is that you will be taken to a secluded spot in the desert, where a traditional Moroccan dinner will be served under the glowing stars and around a campfire. You will then be treated to a range of delicious Moroccan dishes, including tagine, couscous, and Morrocan tea (seriously, this tea is the best!). This dining experience is unlike any other, with the tranquil surroundings of the desert making it a truly magical and one-of-a-kind experience.

After dinner, you will enjoy traditional entertainment as the main show of the night begins! There are Berber folk music and dance performances, which are a feast for the senses and provide a deeper understanding of the local culture. We even had a fire show, which was brilliant! 3. Explore Bahia Palace

Bahia Palace is a magnificent architectural masterpiece that is a must-visit when in Marrakech – and is cheap to enter. Built in the 19th century, this stunning palace showcases the opulence and grandeur of the Moroccan aristocracy. The intricate details and beautiful tile work are a testament to the skills of the craftsmen who built it.

The palace is spread over eight hectares, with numerous rooms, courtyards, gardens, and fountains to explore. Each room is uniquely designed and offers a glimpse into the luxury and lifestyle of the royal family, so you will feel like a Queen during your visit!

Apart from its stunning beauty, Bahia Palace also has a rich historical significance. It was once home to the Grand Vizier of Marrakech, and it served as a residence for the Moroccan royal family for some time. The palace has also hosted many important events and ceremonies, making it an important landmark in Moroccan history.

Visitors can learn more about the palace’s history and the people who lived there through guided tours and informational displays. Bahia Palace offers tourists a chance to step back in time and experience the lavish lifestyle of the past rulers of Morocco – it is best to arrive early, as it does get very busy!

4. Take Photos at Badi Palace

Badi Palace, also known as the Palace of the Incomparable, is another majestic architectural wonder in Marrakech that is worth visiting. Built in the late 16th century, this palace was once considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. It is renowned for its intricately designed courtyard, filled with orange trees and has a massive reflecting pool in the centre.

The opulent interiors of the palace, with its marble columns and rich decorations, are a testament to the wealth and power of the former ruler who built it. Visitors can explore the palace’s various rooms, courtyards, and gardens, taking in its grandeur and learning about its history.

In addition to its stunning architecture, Badi Palace also boasts impressive views of the city of Marrakech. The palace is located on a slightly elevated platform, allowing for panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the famous Koutoubia Mosque.

Badi Palace is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, architecture or simply looking for a peaceful and scenic spot in Marrakech – if you’re a solo traveller, I’d recommend bringing a book or a sketchbook and sitting in the palace for a few hours chilling out!

5. Ride a Camel

Riding a camel has to be up there with one of the most unique things to do in Marrakech! Marrakech is renowned for its camel rides, and it is an experience that no one should miss.

Camel rides are an excellent way to explore the beautiful desert landscape in and around Marrakech and visitors can embark on a guided tour and venture into the nearby palm groves and oases, where you can marvel at the stunning views and snap some memorable photos. The rhythmic swaying of the camel as it walks across the desert is a unique and relaxing experience, and the calm and gentle nature of these animals is sure to make anyone feel at ease – just make sure to wear trousers.

Riding a camel is also a great cultural experience that allows tourists to connect with the local Berber communities living in the desert. Camels have been an integral part of their way of life for centuries, and riding one is a great way to learn more about their traditions and customs, so a visit to Morrocco won’t be complete until you do it.

6. Visit the Ouzoud Waterfalls

The Ouzoud Waterfalls offer visitors a breathtaking natural wonder that is not to be missed. These stunning waterfalls, with a height of over 100 meters, make them the tallest waterfall in North Africa. They flow year-round and are surrounded by lush vegetation and colourful birds.

Tourists can take a hike along the marked trails to reach various viewpoints, each offering a different perspective and vantage point of the falls. Those seeking a more adventurous experience can also take a boat ride to the base of the falls, where they can feel the mist of the cascading water.

Many local vendors also sell traditional handicrafts and delicious homemade food at the falls, which helps provide an opportunity for tourists to support the local community. Additionally, the falls are home to a group of wild monkeys, adding to the charm and excitement of the visit, and helps make it one of the most unique things to do in Marrakech.

My biggest recommendation is to wear good trainers and trousers, as on the way back from the waterfall, we had to hike up a very steep mountain – and I was in a long skirt, so one wrong slip and it could’ve ended very differently. This is the tour we booked.

7. Visit the Yves Saint Laurent Museum

Visiting the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Marrakech is truly a unique and unforgettable experience. From the moment you enter the museum, you are immediately immersed in the world of one of the greatest fashion designers of our time.

The stunning architecture of the building, designed by Studio KO, blends seamlessly with the desert landscape, creating a sense of harmony and tranquillity. As you make your way through the museum, you are taken on a journey through the life and career of Yves Saint Laurent, with a focus on his love for Marrakech.

The collection includes some of his most iconic creations, such as the Mondrian dress and the famous smoking suit. It is a fascinating insight into the designer’s creative process and the evolution of fashion throughout the decades. Not only does the museum showcase Yves Saint Laurent’s incredible fashion legacy, but it also serves as a celebration of Moroccan art and culture.

The adjacent Berber Museum, also designed by Studio KO, houses a collection of over 600 traditional Berber artefacts, from jewellery to textiles to household objects. This juxtaposition of Yves Saint Laurent’s modern and avant-garde designs with traditional Berber art creates a unique and thought-provoking experience. The beautifully curated exhibits provide a deeper understanding and appreciation for the rich heritage and influences that have shaped Moroccan design and fashion.

Marrakech is a vibrant and bustling city with a rich and diverse art scene, making it the perfect destination for art lovers and collectors. One of the best ways to experience the local art scene is by shopping for paintings in Marrakech.

The city is home to numerous art galleries and markets, offering a wide variety of paintings to choose from. From traditional Moroccan art to contemporary and abstract pieces, there is something for every taste and style. Additionally, the prices for paintings in Marrakech are often more affordable compared to other major art markets, making it an ideal place to invest in unique and original pieces – which is always a bonus!

The city is known for its talented and skilled artisans, and by purchasing paintings directly from them or from local galleries, you are contributing to the preservation and promotion of the local art scene. This also gives you the opportunity to learn about the stories and inspirations behind each artwork, creating a more meaningful and personal connection to the piece. Whether you are a seasoned collector or simply looking to add some beauty to your home, shopping for paintings in Marrakech is an enriching and rewarding experience that should not be missed.

9. Haggle at The Souks

Haggling at the souks in Marrakech is an exhilarating and essential part of the Moroccan shopping experience and definitely one of the most unique things to do in Marrakech. The souks, or traditional outdoor markets, are filled with a variety of goods, from spices to textiles to handicrafts, all waiting to be bargained for. While it may seem intimidating at first, haggling is a cultural and social activity in Morocco, and locals believe it is a way to build relationships and show respect for both the buyer and the seller.

As a tourist, you should not be afraid to haggle, as it is expected and often seen as a fun and friendly exchange – and became a fun game between my boyfriend and I. Haggling can also save you money, as prices in the souks are often inflated and open to negotiation. I’ve been to many destinations where haggling is popular, and Marrakech is by far my favourite place to do it – Beijing would have to be the hardest!

To successfully haggle at the souks in Marrakech, it is important to keep a few tips in mind. First, always start by offering a price that is significantly lower than the asking price. The seller will then respond with a counteroffer, and the bargaining process will go back and forth until a fair price is agreed upon. It is also helpful to ensure you have small notes and change on hand, as it can be difficult to haggle if you only have larger notes.

10. Ride Pikala Bikes

Riding Pikala Bikes in Marrakech is not only a fun and eco-friendly way to explore the city, but it also allows you to experience Marrakech like a local. Pikala Bikes are a popular mode of transportation among the locals, and by riding them, you can immerse yourself in the bustling and vibrant streets of the city.

These bikes can be rented from various locations throughout Marrakech, and they offer a convenient and affordable way to get around. The bikes are equipped with comfortable seats, baskets, and a map of the city, making it easy to navigate and explore the different neighbourhoods and attractions of Marrakech.

Riding a Pikala bike also allows you to discover hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path spots that may not be accessible by car or tour bus. It is a refreshing and authentic way to see the city and get a glimpse into the daily lives of the locals. There is also an amazing cafe, called the Pikala Cafe, where we went for my birthday breakfast. This cafe serves delicious vegan food, has beautiful seating, supports locals and often hosts many great events! You can rent a bike through this cafe, which I’d recommend!

11. Hike The Atlas Mountains

Hiking the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech is a must-do for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. The Atlas Mountains, located just a short drive from the bustling city, are a stunning and majestic landscape that offers breathtaking views and opportunities for adventure.

There are various hiking trails, ranging from easy to challenging, so there is something suitable for all fitness levels. The most popular route is the hike to Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. The trail takes you through picturesque valleys and traditional Berber villages, offering a unique cultural experience and stunning scenery. Along the way, you can stop at local cafes and enjoy a refreshing glass of tea while enjoying the surrounding mountains’ beauty.

Hiking the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech is a memorable and rewarding experience that allows you to escape the bustling city and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Morocco. To experience the Atlas Mountains, we booked a day tour. This included pick-up/ drop-off, lunch at a women’s cooperative, food at a restaurant overlooking the mountains, a fantastic tour guide and stops along the mountains and to a waterfall.
